On Thursday night, December 11, 2014, shoppers at Freehold Raceway Mall were treated to a spectacular season’s greetings as Rabbi Brooks Susman and the Congregation Kol Am of Freehold choir kicked off a singing flash mob. The event commenced with the piercing of the mall’s din by Rabbi Susman as he sounded a shofar in the center court. As the Rabbi faded into the crowd, the Congregation Kol Am choir sang out “Oh Chanukah, Oh Chanukah, come light the Menorah,” the opening lines of the Feast of Lights medley. Seconds later, voices rang out, throughout the lower and upper level as 175 singers joined in sequentially to complete the medley and all together sang “Jingle Bell Rock.” At the end of the five minute outburst of joy, the 175 singers dispersed as quickly as they appeared.
Congregation Kol Am of Freehold staged the flash mob as a way to express good will to all during this holiday season. The event coordinators, Victoria and Michael Shernicoff, also wanted the event to reflect the temple’s appreciation of the community support it has received during the past 12 years, and celebrate its establishment of a footprint within the community at 59 Broad Street in Freehold Borough.
The joyous harmony, which delighted young and old, was graciously provided by the members of the Congregation Kol Am Choir, the Liberty Oak Chorus, Heart of New Jersey Chorus and Jersey Harmony Chorus chapters of Sweet Adeline International; the Red Bank Area Chapter of Barbershop Harmony Society; Sweet Adeline registered quartets, “Synergy,” “Impulse!,” “Balancing Act” and “Match 4”; and Howell High School’s A Capella groups “Rebel Yell”, “The Rebelettes” and “Rebelation,” under the direction of Mr. Joseph Cantaffa.
